How to Choose the Right Sim Racing Steering Wheel for Your Racing Discipline

Every racing discipline demands a different driving position and wheel design. The shape, diameter and weight of your steering wheel should match the type of car you drive most often. There is no single perfect steering wheel—only wheels that are optimised for specific racing disciplines.

Discipline Shape Typical Diameter Recommended Features

Formula (F1, F2)

Formula / Flat 270–300 mm Integrated LCD display, numerous buttons, rotary encoders and dual-clutch paddles.

GT Racing

Compact Round 300–310 mm Alcantara or leather grips, front-mounted buttons, magnetic paddle shifters and a robust quick release system.

Rally

Large Round 320–330 mm Durable leather with reinforced stitching and a full round shape for fast, large steering inputs.

Drifting

XL Round 330–350 mm Perforated anti-slip leather, steering wheel spacer, minimal electronics and maximum grip.

Touring Cars / NASCAR

D-Shape Round 310–330 mm Dual-clutch paddles for race starts, radio buttons and rotary encoders for Brake Bias and Traction Control adjustments.

If your main simulator is iRacing or Assetto Corsa Competizione and you primarily compete in GT3 racing, a 300–310 mm round steering wheel with Alcantara grips, magnetic paddle shifters and dual-clutch paddles—such as the Simagic GT Neo or GTS—is one of the most versatile choices available.

If Formula racing is your main focus, the Simagic Zeus Formula range with its integrated MagicDash display delivers an exceptional level of immersion. And if you’re looking for a modular ecosystem that lets you switch wheel rims depending on the discipline, the Neo X Hub allows you to reuse the same electronics while fitting different wheel rims for GT, Formula or Rally driving.

Materials, Feel and Ergonomics

The material used for the grips has a significant impact on comfort, durability and overall driving feel:

Alcantara: Offers maximum grip and a premium motorsport feel. Racing gloves are highly recommended to prevent sweat from wearing the material prematurely.

Perforated Synthetic Leather: Extremely durable, moisture resistant and ideal for everyday use without gloves. It provides a comfortable yet secure grip.

Genuine Leather: Premium appearance with a warm, natural feel. It gradually softens over time and moulds to the driver’s hands.

Silicone: Ergonomic soft-touch grips that are easy to clean and absorb vibrations, helping reduce fatigue during long racing sessions. An excellent choice for beginners and endurance racers.

Wheel Construction: Most professional steering wheels are manufactured from carbon fibre (lightweight, rigid and premium) or CNC-machined aluminium (heavier but exceptionally durable). Carbon fibre combined with Alcantara remains the benchmark for high-end sim racing wheels.

Sim Racing Steering Wheel Brands Available at Bolori

Button Boxes & Modular Ecosystems

If you’re looking for maximum versatility, products such as the GT PRO HUB or the Simagic Neo X Hub allow you to swap wheel rims (round, Formula or D-shaped) while keeping the same electronics, button layout and RGB lighting. It’s the ideal solution for drivers who compete across multiple disciplines—GT, Formula and Rally—without investing in three complete steering wheels.

The Neo X Hub, for example, is compatible with every wheel rim in the Simagic Neo X range and features 8 programmable buttons, 4 rotary encoders, 2 rotary switches and a fully configurable RGB LED light ring. Thanks to the Maglink USB cable, it can be connected to virtually any Direct Drive wheelbase on the market.

Likewise, the Maglink system gives advanced Simagic steering wheels native USB connectivity, making them compatible with wheelbases from other leading manufacturers such as Fanatec, Simucube, Moza and VRS.

With the appropriate Quick Release adapter (50 mm or 70 mm), you can use your Simagic steering wheel on almost any Direct Drive wheelbase while retaining full functionality, including buttons, rotary encoders and RGB lighting.

What Else Do You Need with Your Sim Racing Steering Wheel?

A sim racing steering wheel is only one part of a complete simulator setup. To get the most out of your equipment, you’ll also need the following components:

  1. A compatible Direct Drive wheelbase: The steering wheel connects to the wheelbase via the Quick Release system. Browse our Direct Drive wheelbases.
  2. A compatible Quick Release: Most Simagic steering wheels include the 50 mm Quick Release as standard. If you’re using a third-party steering wheel or a wheelbase from another manufacturer, you may require a compatible adapter. Feel free to contact us for advice.
  3. Sim Racing Pedals: Although independent from the steering wheel, high-quality pedals are essential to fully experience the precision of a Direct Drive setup. Explore our sim racing pedals.
  4. A rigid cockpit: For wheelbases producing 12 Nm of torque or more, a solid aluminium profile cockpit is highly recommended to eliminate flex and maximise force feedback performance. Browse our sim racing cockpits.
  5. Manufacturer software: Simagic’s free SimPro Manager software allows you to configure buttons, RGB lighting, paddle clutches and individual profiles for each simulator.

Frequently asked questions about Steering Wheel

The Quick Release is the quick-release mechanism that mechanically connects the wheel to the base. On most Simagic wheels and hubs distributed by Bolori, the 50mm Quick Release comes integrated from the factory to provide a robust, play-free connection.

Magnetic paddle shifters use contactless sensors that prevent wear and ensure a crisp, rapid tactile response, reducing gear changes. Meanwhile, dual-clutch systems (like those in the Zeus GT) allow you to fine-tune the engagement point for spectacular, spin-free acceleration from a standstill.

Yes, thanks to modular wired connection technology (like the Maglink ecosystem). By connecting the wheel directly to your PC via the dedicated USB cable, you can mount it on third-party bases using a compatible 50mm or 70mm quick-release adapter.

Alcantara offers maximum grip for racing but requires the mandatory use of gloves to prevent premature wear from sweat. Synthetic or perforated leather is highly durable and easy to clean, ideal for extended daily use. Silicone grips (found on the Zeus Formula and GT Neo) offer a soft, ergonomic feel and are very easy to clean.

All telemetry customization, engine RPM LEDs, and integrated displays (such as those in the Zeus Formula packages) are managed directly through the brand’s official software (such as SimPro Manager). It is compatible with the main simulators on the market (iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Automobilista 2, etc.).

For beginners, the best value for money options are the Simagic Neo X range wheels (Neo X-310G, Neo X-330T, Neo X-350W) or the Simagic GT Neo in carbon fiber. All include integrated quick release, magnetic paddle shifters, and are compatible with the entire Alpha base range. If your simulator is Formula racing, the Simagic Zeus Sport wheel is an excellent entry point.

It depends on the type of car: for GT and touring cars, 300-310 mm is standard. For Formula, 270-300 mm square (more compact). For Rally, 320-330 mm round with more turning radius. For Drift, 330-350 mm round with perforated leather. If you have any questions, send us a WhatsApp message with your simulator and driving style, and we’ll make a recommendation.

Most professional-grade sim racing wheels (including Simagic) are PC-only because they are designed to work with advanced telemetry software. For consoles, there are specific options officially licensed by Sony/Microsoft. Contact us for advice on models compatible with your console.

Delivery within 24-48 business hours to mainland Spain from our warehouse. For the rest of Europe, the usual delivery time is 3-5 business days. All orders are shipped with tracking and require a signature upon delivery.

No. In this category, you’re only buying the wheel and its integrated electronics. If you’re looking for a complete set (Direct Drive base + wheel + pedals) at a discount, check out our Complete Simracing Packs.

The Neo X range features round wheels in various finishes (GT in Alcantara, Rally in leather, Drift in perforated leather) for drivers who want a specialized steering wheel for their specific racing discipline. The GT Neo is a versatile carbon fiber wheel with a dual clutch, ideal for general GT use. The Zeus range (Sport, GT, Formula) is the newest and incorporates integration with the MagicDash 4 display, making it Simagic’s premium choice.
